Terence Richoux — Attorney at the Paris Bar

Terence Richoux has been a member of the Paris Bar since 2014. He advises individuals, companies and foreign counsel on matters involving France and one or more foreign jurisdictions.

He established his own law firm in 2015 and has since developed an independent practice focused primarily on cross-border matters and situations requiring French law to be coordinated with foreign legal systems.

His practice is principally dedicated to private international law and to cases in which a French legal issue forms part of a broader international situation.

A Practice Focused on Cross-Border Matters

An international legal issue rarely involves French law alone.

It is often necessary to understand what has happened, or what needs to happen, in another country, determine the consequences of each step and establish how a foreign judgment, proceeding, agreement or legal situation can produce effects in France.

This interaction between different legal systems lies at the heart of Terence Richoux’s practice.

His work includes matters involving:

  • recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments in France;
  • exequatur proceedings;
  • cross-border litigation;
  • disputes involving parties, assets or agreements located in different countries;
  • international divorce and family matters;
  • recognition in France of foreign judgments and legal acts;
  • coordination between French proceedings and proceedings taking place abroad.

Each matter is considered as a whole. The objective is to understand how the different legal systems involved operate and to coordinate them as smoothly and effectively as possible.

A French-American Perspective

Terence Richoux is French-American and works professionally in both French and English, with English playing a particularly significant role in his day-to-day practice.

This dual background helps him understand not only differences between legal systems, but also differences in professional methods, communication and expectations between clients, lawyers and other professionals from different countries.

He completed his legal education at Paris II Panthéon-Assas University, with a particular focus on comparative and European business law. As part of his postgraduate studies, he also undertook research work in collaboration with the University of Oxford.

His professional training also took him to the United States, where he continued his legal training with Dennis Sullivan, a San Francisco attorney whose practice includes business law and international legal matters.

This experience allowed him to deepen his understanding of U.S. legal practice, particularly in the areas of business law and cross-border transactions, as well as the differences in legal reasoning, professional methods and approach between civil-law and common-law systems.

Combined with his French-American background, this experience continues to inform his approach to cross-border matters and his ability to coordinate legal issues involving different jurisdictions.

Clients in France and Around the World

The firm advises clients based in France and abroad, including clients in Europe, North America and Asia.

In many cases, the client does not live in France and requires French counsel to handle one part of a wider international matter while communicating directly with the client or with lawyers in another jurisdiction.

Terence Richoux therefore regularly works alongside foreign attorneys and other professionals to coordinate the different aspects of a matter.

Where several jurisdictions are involved, the objective is to avoid dealing with proceedings in one country without considering their potential consequences in another.

Direct and Regular Communication

International matters require clear communication.

The firm therefore places particular importance on maintaining direct communication with clients and, where appropriate, with their foreign counsel.

Clients are kept informed of significant developments and of decisions that need to be made.

The objective is not to create unnecessary correspondence, but to ensure that everyone involved has the relevant information when it becomes useful.

This is particularly important where several proceedings, jurisdictions or professional advisers are involved in the same matter.

A Practical Approach to International Cases

Cross-border matters often involve an additional difficulty: a solution that is legally effective in one country may not be sufficient if it must subsequently produce consequences elsewhere.

The strategy must therefore take account of the matter as a whole.

Before proceedings are commenced or enforcement measures are taken, the firm may need to consider:

  • which courts have jurisdiction;
  • which law applies;
  • whether proceedings are already pending abroad;
  • how a foreign judgment can be recognized or enforced in France;
  • what consequences French proceedings may have in another jurisdiction;
  • and which procedural route is most likely to produce an effective result.

This broader analysis can be particularly important where several countries, lawyers or proceedings are involved at the same time.

An Independent Practice Since 2015

After joining the Paris Bar in 2014, Terence Richoux established his own law firm in 2015.

This allowed him to develop an independent practice centered on the matters he was most interested in handling: international situations in which French law must operate alongside a foreign legal system.

The firm maintains a direct relationship with its clients and can act independently or in coordination with French and foreign counsel where the circumstances of the matter require it.

Terence Richoux is also included on the list of attorneys maintained by the U.S. Embassy in Paris for U.S. citizens seeking legal assistance in France.
